Some people go their whole lives not knowing what they want to be when they grow up. That was not the case for Arkansas High School Head Baseball Coach, Layne Berry.
Layne knew at a very young age that he wanted to coach. Being raised with 3 brothers and his dad being a former AHS coach and his mother a teacher for TASD, the Razorbacks were always at the forefront of his mind.
Layne attended Trice Elementary, North Heights Junior High, and Arkansas High School. While at Arkansas High School, he was involved in many clubs and activities. But there was one that he enjoyed above all others, baseball. Layne made All-Conference Baseball his junior and senior year and All-State Baseball his senior year. After graduating from Arkansas High School in 1998, he was awarded a baseball scholarship to the University of Arkansas. Layne pitched for the University of Arkansas in 2001 and 2002. He was then the Student Assistant Coach for the University of Arkansas Razorbacks in 2003 and 2004.
Layne began coaching at Arkansas High School in 2013. He serves as Head Baseball Coach and Assistant Football Coach. Coach Berry also teaches Criminal Justice at the Texarkana Arkansas Career and Technological Center. Coach Berry was voted All Star Coach of the Year in 2014 and voted Extra Innings Coach of the Year in 2015. Prior to coaching at Arkansas High School, Coach Berry led the Trinity Christian School baseball team to be the 2009 State Championship Runners-Up and 2010 State Champions.
Coach Berry enjoys spending time with his wife Haley, a Dyslexia Specialist at Trice Elementary. Layne enjoys hunting and fishing with his two daughters, Bella, a 5th grader at College Academy of Design, and Bristol, a 2nd grader at Trice Elementary.
Coach Berry is inspired to make a difference in the lives of TASD students because growing up he was fortunate to have strong coaches who made a positive impact on his life. He wants to do the same for his players. It's important to him, not only to win games, but to help mold his players into outstanding young men who give back to their community.
Because of his dedication to the students of Texarkana Arkansas School District, we would like to say thank you to Coach Layne Berry! You are a TASD HOMETOWN HERO.
